Genesis 9:8-14
“Then God spoke to Noah and his sons: “I’m setting up my covenant with you including your children who will come after you, along with everything alive around you—birds, farm animals, wild animals—that came out of the ship with you.
I’m setting up my covenant with you that never again will everything living be destroyed by floodwaters; no, never again will a flood destroy the Earth.”
God continued, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and everything living around you and everyone living after you. I’m putting my rainbow in the clouds, a sign of the covenant between me and the Earth.
From now on, when I form a cloud over the Earth and the rainbow appears in the cloud, I’ll remember my covenant..”
And so it rained four days non-stop in America’s 4th largest city HOUSTON TEXAS, with probably the most modern infrastructure in the world.
According to meterological records, the 4-day rain recorded is equivalent to a previous record of rainfall in the last year. In other words, 1 year’s rain fell in just 4 days, leaving in its wake, a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions.
But it was not “all bad” from Hurricane Harvey. Some good can be drawn from it.
First, God is faithful and his word never falls to the ground. In the above passage, we see his promise never to allow all life to be destroyed again by flood. The Covenant of the Rainbow. And it’s amazing that God took this covenant so serious. A rainbow marks the footage of his throne in heaven forever.
Rev 4:3
“And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald”.
Secondly, for those who scoffed at the story of Noah and the flood, the destruction of just 4 days flood buried a great city. Noah’s was 40 days and 40 nights stupid.
Thirdly, because God is faithful to his word, we can always look forward to life being saved, no matter the Hurricane, Katrina, Harvey, Irma or any more to come.
Thank God for first responders and the Government, but we have God’s awesome assurances.
Fourthly, the Harvey shook men up and brought all of us closer to sobriety.
Suddenly, race and skin color took a back seat. It didn’t matter if you were Caucasian, Latino, Asian, or Black.
Suddenly it didn’t matter the size of your house, or the zip code you lived.
Suddenly it didn’t matter your work, Fortune 500 or Street Janitor.
ALL THAT MATTERED was the flood. Are you alive or dead? Are you safe and dry, or are you safe and suffered losses?
No one dared call anyone “illegal immigrants “, at least for one week or two, and probably still counting.
Who says we don’t know what is good and how to do it.
As we rebuild, may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be upon us all. Amen.
May we all be reminded that someday in the near future, all that will matter, will be: “WHAT DID YOU DO WITH JESUS”…
